LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT YOUNGSUN JUNG FROM SOUTH KOREA IS THE 2023 RECIPIENT OF THE SIR GEOFFREY JELLICOE AWARD
The International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA), which represents the worldwide profession of Landscape Architecture, proudly announced that YoungSun Jung is the winner of the 2023 IFLA Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award in Landscape Architecture.
The award is the preeminent award for landscape architects and the highest honour IFLA can bestow. The jury, composed of the chair, a member from each of the five IFLA regions worldwide and a guest member, agreed that “YoungSun Jung is one of the significant professionals with exceptional work and a significant contribution to the field of landscape architecture”.
YoungSun Jung ́s approach to landscape architecture not just pioneered and led landscape design in Korea, but also “translated” the unfamiliar concept of landscape which originated from the West to fit Korean land and landscape. With projects like Cheonggye Stream Restoration and Seonyudo Park, she and her office SeoAhn Total Landscape anticipated international trends to reconcile nature and city, to integrate natural processes in our built environment and to respect the industrial traces of the past and make it part of new designs. The commitment to resiliency and sustainability, key concerns today are implicit in the work. These projects had worldwide impact and influence on the profession of landscape architecture.
Furthermore, the promotion of the profession is reflected through teaching and the numerous committees from diverse disciplines that YoungSun Jung has been involved in. Born in 1941, YoungSun Jung graduated from the Department of Agriculture at Seoul National University in 1964 and from the Department of Landscape Architecture at the same university in 1975. YoungSun Jung worked as a Professor at Cheongju University and Adjunct Professor at Sungkyunkwan University before founding SeoAhn Total Landscape in 1987. From 2010 to 2012, YoungSun Jung was Chair Professor at the Landscape Architecture Department at Seoul National University.
In the years when the social awareness of landscape architecture was poor in Korea, YoungSun Jung emphasized the importance of landscape architecture through major projects such as the Asian Athlete’s Apartment Complex (1984), the Seoul Arts Center (1984),the Olympic Athlete’s Apartment Complex’(1985), Heewon Garden, Hoam Art Museum (1997-1998), Incheon International Airport (1999), Seoul Olympic Museum of Art and Sculpture Park (1999), Cheonggye Stream Restoration (Section 1, 2002-2005), Gwanghwamun Plaza (2007), Gyeongchun Line Regeneration Park (2014) or Seoul Botanic Park (2014). Seonyudo Park (1999-2002) achieved international recognition and won numerous international awards. YoungSun Jung’s professional public and private practice range from large scale public works at many levels to smaller scale well-balanced garden designs and restorations that enhance cultural heritage. The projects on all scales reflect an approach resulting in sublime, delicate, sensible, and balanced work which fits well in its context.
As excellent and passionate landscape practitioner and an intellectual leader within the field of landscape architecture combined with an exceptional design capability, poetic sensibility, and 50 years of professional experience, YoungSun Jung is the perfect recipient of the Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award in Landscape Architecture and the jury felt that she richly deserves the highest honour that the International Federation of Landscape Architects can bestow upon a landscape architect.
ANNOUNCEMENT
The IFLA president, Bruno Marques announced the award winner during the 59th IFLA World Congress in Stockholm, Sweden and Nairobi, Kenya between 28 and 30 September, 2023. The IFLA President made the announcement in the Award Ceremony at the IFLA World Congress on 28 September, 2023 and YoungSun Jung gave a lecture as part of the ceremony. There will be a press conference with the award winner and the IFLA President.
THE AWARD
The IFLA Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award is the highest honour that the International Federation of Landscape Architects can bestow upon a landscape architect. The Award recognizes a living landscape architect whose lifetime achievements and contributions have had a unique and lasting impact on the welfare of society and the environment and on the promotion of the profession of landscape architecture. The award is bestowed annually on an academic, public or private practitioner whose work and achievements are respected internationally.
The IFLA Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award was launched in 2004 on a quadrennial basis but since 2011 it has been bestowed annually. Its inaugural recipient was Peter Walker (USA) in 2005. Since then, the previous winners are:

Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe (1910–1996), IFLA President of Honour, served IFLA as its founding President from 1948 to 1954. He was a trained architect, town planner, landscape architect and garden designer, but his prime interest was in landscape and garden design. Jellicoe was a founding member (1929) and then President of the Institute of Landscape Architects (now the Landscape Institute) and was knighted for services to Landscape Architecture in 1979. In 1994, he was given the Royal Horticultural Society’s highest award, the Victoria Medal of Honour.
The Jellicoe Award recognizes a living Landscape Architect whose lifetime achievements and contributions have had a unique and lasting impact on the welfare of society and the environment, and the promotion of the profession of Landscape Architecture.
The 2023 SGJA International Jury was chaired by Peter Zöch (Austria) and included: Claudia Oñate, Americas, Anna Lambertini, Europe, Nayla Al Akl, Middle East, Yoshiki Mishima, Asia Pacific, Finzi Saidi, Africa and Arthur Adeya, who was the guest member of the jury.
The Secretariat for the IFLA Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award, which oversees all aspects of the award, includes Reem Alissa and Diana Wiesner and is directed by Gareth Doherty.
